- CrowdStrike compensates those impacted by last week's global outage
- Tech outage affected multiple industries, grounding flights worldwide
- Partners received an email with an Uber Eats code
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike is offering $10 Uber Eats gift cards to its partners as an apology for a major tech outage that affected millions of computers worldwide last week. This gesture, initially reported by TechCrunch, aims to acknowledge the "additional work" caused by the crash on July 19.
In an email shared on social media platform X, Daniel Bernard, CrowdStrike's Chief Business Officer, expressed the company's gratitude and apologies for the inconvenience. The email, sent from a CrowdStrike address, concluded with a link to Uber Eats, inviting recipients to enjoy a complimentary coffee or snack as a token of appreciation.
CrowdStrike confirmed in a statement to Nexstar that these gift cards were exclusively sent to its teammates and partners, not to customers. "We did not send gift cards to customers or clients," the statement clarified. "These were given to our teammates and partners who have been assisting customers during this situation."
However, some recipients faced difficulties redeeming the gift cards on Uber Eats, encountering messages indicating the offer had been rescinded. CrowdStrike explained that "Uber flagged it as fraud due to high usage rates."
The CrowdStrike outage had widespread repercussions, impacting various sectors including banking, aviation, railways, healthcare, emergency services, and some broadcast news operations. The company attributed the outage to a software bug in its content-validation system.
In a post on X, CrowdStrike emphasized its awareness of the impact and extended deep apologies, thanking customers and industry partners for their support and assistance. "We understand what happened and are committed to ensuring it doesn’t occur again," the post concluded.
